5 Skin Conditions Caused by Diabetes

Diabetes is a disease that is the cause of many painful symptoms. Skin problems are common health issues that many people diagnosed with diabetes experience one way or another. According to Everyday Health, here are 5 skin conditions that may be created or worsened thanks to diabetes.

  1. Bacterial Infections. While bacterial infections are not exclusive to someone with diabetes, the likelihood one of these infections being formed is much higher. As Everyday Health states, boils, nail infections, carbuncles, and eyelid sties are all common.
  2. Fungal Infections. Those with diabetes are prone to contracting fungal rashes that inflame the skin and cause itching. These can be found in warm and moist areas such as armpits and toes.
  3. Vitiligo. This is a condition that actually destroys the skin cells that make melanin. This causes discolored blotches on the skin. If you or a loved one has this condition, it is important to wear sunscreen, since the affected skin is susceptible to sunburns.
  4. Ulcers. Because diabetes can cause nerve damage, you may find ulcers in the feet and even lose feeling in the extremities.
  5. Blisters. Finally, some diabetes patients suffer from bullosis diabeticorum, which are blisters that resemble those from severe burns. These are actually typically pain-free, but can cause irritation.

If you or a loved one has any type of diabetes, it is important to look out for skin conditions. Caregivers should regularly look out for these conditions if an aging loved one has diabetes. If one of these conditions does show up, consult a physician right away.
